Forgotten Monuments of Agra-Chhatri of Jaswant Singh

Agra city has a large number Mughal Tombs .The history of this city is replete with mughal tales .The city has vast legacy of architecture .Almost  very part of the city has  beautiful  tombs, havelis and palaces . The city abounds in lesser known monuments .

One of  the less known monuments is the kiosk of Jaswant singh . This is the cremation place of the consort of Amar Singh Rathore who was killed in Agra Fort in  1644 A.D.Later this body was given to the widow queen who hailed from Bundi district of Rajasthan. At this palace the widow committed sati and to commemorate this event the younger brother of late Amar Singh Rathore- Raja Jaswant Singh erected this beautiful Samadhi .It took almost ten years to complete it   This is the only monument of the Rajput rulers in the mughal  city.

This beautiful  monument stands on the bank of river Yamuna in the Kishanpur locality of Balkeshwar colony, Agra and you can include this in Agra Tour Package. It is presently a victim of the illegal encroachment . Though A.S.I  has done tremendous work of restoration over here, but still a lot is to be done ,this kiosk (Chhatri) stands on a square plinth . And is purely made of red sandstone .It had originally  beautiful  causeways ,cascades ,the remains  of these are still  seen. The main kiosk displays fine filigree work in sandstone . On the four corners of the kiosk are beautiful cupolas. The two front ones  have wells from where water used to be drawn for the irrigation of the four gardens and the water cascades . From this front kiosk one can have nice view and pictures of the rippling waters of the river Yamuna and of Aram Bagh of Babur .Which is the final resting place of the first mughal emperor .

You also perceive a four storied tower on the other side of river Yamuna which was probably used as the light house as the river was used for transport and navigation .

The monument is today used by the children of the surrounding area as a play ground ,they play all sort of games over here.

The inward area of this kiosk got the 16 toilet material of the bereaved Handa queen who later got herself sati (self immolated) on the pyre of the late king. This was customary in Rajasthan area and this was common phenomenon practised after the death of husband the widow used to be Sati.  This mal practice was stopped  by a regulation in the British time by lord William  Bentinck  and  Indian Social Reformer Raja  Ram Mohan Roy . Hindu ladies after marriage have normally sixteen types of srangar . As a memory still you find  bangles and much other stuff used by the ladies like nail polish etc
